Yoga: Finding Your Breath

My daughter introduced me to yoga years ago when she was in college. I was skeptical at first. It was awkward, and I felt self-conscious. My body was very resistant to twisting and contorting. I thought, "This couldn’t possibly be good for me." I almost gave up. But she encouraged me to keep trying, educating me on the many benefits.

As I grudgingly continued, I began to notice small changes. I felt better on the days I did yoga. I slept better. I could control my breath. I slowly grew stronger and more flexible. It helped with stress. My joint pain diminished. I joined an online community, "Find What Feels Good" and completed multiple 30-day challenges. During the covid pandemic, it was another way to stay connected in a healthy way.
During a visit to Maui a few years ago, I came across a notice that the Maui Ocean Center offered a class after hours in the ocean room. The ocean room is a serene, dim place where you can spend hours watching the marine life glide by.

Our class was small, and it was a very gentle, relaxing practice with quiet, spa like music playing in the background. The experience was a highlight of the trip. It was definitely a great way to decompress, stretch, and practice controlled breathing. The serenity was amazing.
On subsequent vacations, I've packed my yoga mat and gotten in many sessions both indoors and out. I'm still most comfortable by myself or in small groups but have enjoyed larger classes, too. Yogi buddies are the best!

Yoga might not appeal to you, but I encourage you to find exercise that you enjoy and that you can do wherever you are. And if you can do it outside, extra points!
If you practice, where is your favorite go to place? Send me a message, a picture, or comment online.
