The Conversation Road

My husband, dog, and I walk the same road nearly every morning. Winter, summer, spring, or fall, we walk through it all. We have rain gear for when it's wet, heated vests for when it's cold, and head lamps and reflective clothing for when it's dark. Our busy dog does so much better when he gets his morning constitutional. As do we.
Daily walking allows us time to commune with nature, ruminate on long thoughts, and discuss topics important to us. Sometimes we don't talk at all. The silence is a wonderful break in our noisy, overstimulated world. Other times, we discuss an upcoming business trip, planned vacation, story outline, or the capers of our grandchildren. We usually carry a cup of coffee or tea, the fragrant steam a gentle backdrop for the words.

We get mild to moderate exercise (there are hills involved) that elevate our heart rates and warm our muscles. The fresh air is wonderful (though right now it's smoke season). The wildlife antics never cease to make us laugh and smile. Baby turkeys running in circles, shy, dappled fawns picking their way up a steep bank, and mischievous squirrels pelting us with pinecones and muttering unrepeatable tirades at our dog.
The road has been privy to serious conversations. We've processed grief over loved one's passing, discussed finances, contemplated altering life changes. The evergreen trees tower over us, giant eavesdroppers to decades of hushed conversation, shouts of laughter, and silent tears. The aspen and willow whisper secrets behind silvery green leaves while the river flows in constancy.
Conversation isn't always just between us. We've held countless impromptu chats with neighbors, catching up on the news of the week, the details of the day. It's better than a newspaper or social media. It's in person, gracing us with the warmth of a handshake, the kindness of a smile.

While the road has changed over the years, the consistency of our walks has not. It's a time I cherish whether it be with my spouse, my grown children and littles, or dear friends. It's a habit I plan on practicing for a long time.
