Nope: Not Gonna Happen

Writer's picture: Stacy WilliamsStacy Williams

Kona has a stubborn streak. Our now four-month-old puppy loves walks, but some days are better than others with leash training. Sly defiance fills his eyes. Paws brace in the gravel. He plants his bum. His body language reads, nope. Not gonna happen, human.

Have you ever felt that way? Said that in your head? Or even out loud? I have. That stubborn voice in your subconscious shouts a hard no. Can’t convince me. Absolute refusal. You understand the necessity of completing a task or a project assigned by your boss, spouse, friend, or child. It is certainly OK to say no. We have to or life would be overwhelming. But, maybe, it’s the still small voice that asks you to do it. And you still turn your head, heart, and resources in the exact opposite direction.

A cream golden retriever puppy pulling on a leash.

I have felt that way too many times to count. The difficult part is we know in our heart that whatever 'it' is, it must be done. We've been convicted. Dragging our feet or putting it off doesn’t help. Maybe it’s a necessary exercise routine or a big snarly work project. Perhaps your doctor recommended a diet and lifestyle change. Perchance you need to apologize to a loved one or clean out your clothes closet. The "or" list is endless; at least mine seems that way. And don't get me started on the rationalizations of why I didn't/don't/won't/shouldn't.

I heard a quote today on the radio, and it resonated with me enough to look it up so I would get the words right:

"Procrastination is the arrogant assumption that God will give you another opportunity to do in the future what he has called you to do today." -Rosie O'Neal.

Our lives are finite. We each have only a number of days. What will you use them for?

So, get it done. Bite the bullet. Eat the worm. Take the walk. Do the hard things first. Take care of business. Don't prolong the procrastination by digging in your heels. Then, enjoy the play. The rewards are incomparable.

Oh Stacy... you penned the "no" dilemma beautifully!!! I am so guilty too! I appreciate the "bite the bullet" approach to resolve. I'll keep a picture in my mind of sweet Kona in his nope form. A good reminder that things that seem bad might not be so bad after all!! Have a great weekend!!!

Thanks Marilyn. I think I have my "nope" down to a science but am trying to unlearn that auto response.
