Letters From Camp: A Dog's Summer

We recently watched our daughter's dog, Mira. Our daughter's family went on a much needed vacation, and they couldn't take her. Mira is a sweet, medium-sized, Brittany with mostly good manners. She gets along well with our Golden Retriever, Kona. They love to wrestle and play. With the weather warming, they also love to swim and then nap themselves dry on the porch. If Mira wrote her parents a letter during her stay with us, this is what it would have said:

Dear Mom and Dad,

Summer camp is awesome. I miss my brothers' dropping food on the floor and little boy bedtime snuggles, but I don't miss the cats. They are never nice to me! Kona and I go for walks every morning and sometimes in the evenings, too. Grandma and Grandpa are very preoccupied with gathering the little green bags when we head back home. Not sure why. Sometimes there are a lot.

There are lots of birds to sniff out and chase, geese, ducks, robins, stellar jays, quail, turkeys, and my favorite, killdeer. They taunt me when I get too close. I haven't caught one yet, but I really like to try. I tend to ignore the commands to come when I'm chasing them.

Kona and I love to swim and then roll in the sand. Then we get to swim again. I never get the ball, but I like to chase Kona. I think he's showing off. One of these times, I will surprise him and get to the ball first. When it's time to get dry, Grandma lays lots of towels out on the deck. Kona and I rub our ears dry and then shake. Then we nap. We usually need a snack after all of that. Grandpa keeps a jar of treats downstairs as a reward for getting brushed.

We also get to go for car rides. We have our own blankets in the back seat. Grandpa puts the windows down so we can stick our heads out. I like it when the wind tickles my ears. There are a lot of smells out there. We also have toys in case we get bored or tired of wrestling.

It's fun at Grand Camp! I hope you are having fun too. I miss you but not that much because I love summer at the river.

Love, Mira

I hope the kickoff to your summer is fantastic. Make the most of the longer days and warm temperatures. Enjoy the fresh produce from your garden or the farmer's market. Take a moment to appreciate a dog's perspective of summer. Warm evenings by the campfire, naps in the sun, frisbee at the park, and shaking water on unsuspecting friends nearby.
