Cold Treats: Summer Fun

I've always loved popsicles and ice cream in the summer. I don't eat them often now. But I have fond memories of enjoying the frozen treats with my children and from when I was growing up with my siblings and cousins. The grocery store in our little town, both as a child and when I had my own children, had a freezer case right up front by the register. Smart marketing but hard on moms. I know I used the same strategy with my kids that my mom and grandmother used with me while shopping with three treat-loving littles. "If you behave yourselves while we're shopping, you can pick out whatever frozen treat you'd like." It always worked. Every. Single. Time. Who can resist a frozen confection?

Bomb pops, pudding pops, frozen yogurt pushups. Homemade pops, juice bars, and the rainbow of Otter Pops. Creamsicles, fudgesicles, Klondike bars. Sherbert pushups and root beer floats. Good Humor, Haagen Dazs, Dove. Froyo. Yum!

Remember the Schwan truck? We lived rural and would sometimes get a few things when the truck was in our neighborhood. It was always an extra special treat as we had to stretch our grocery dollars. With three kids, the debates were endless on which box of frozen bliss to choose. Agreements were hard won. The sticky hands and faces were free.

As an adult, my tastes have changed a bit. I'm more discriminate on how I spend my treat calories. I still like popsicles but prefer to make them homemade with fruit and juice in the blender. However, I have a weakness for really good gelato. Double points if it's chocolate or coffee. We were once on vacation and there was an Italian, family-owned gelato shop. We frequented their establishment a dozen times that trip. Sweet memories are meant to be savored and shared.

Ice cream bars passed out during the long, hot wheat harvest. Blizzards at DQ. Otter Pops at Vacation Bible School. Soft serve at Dub's. Gelato on family vacations. Popsicles in the sprinkler. Cold treats can be enjoyed in multiple forms at any time. You could have ice cream for dinner like I did the other evening at the new ice cream shop in town. It was delicious! What is your favorite frozen treat summer memory?
